Matt was born in San Jose, California and is of Czechoslovakian, Lithuanian and Japanese descents. He completed his early education from Evergreen Valley High School in San Jose, California. He got his nickname “Megatoad” from the character Toad from the Super Mario Franchise. His mother is Cathy Stonie and his father are Dorian Stonie.

Matt Stonie made his debut at the Stockton Deep Fried Asparagus Championship in Stockton, California in the year 2011.he was the youngest member of the Major Eating Organisation at that time being only 18 years old. He won a lobster roll eating contest in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire in 2010 which was his first ever win. He rose to fame when he defeated 8-time defending champion Joey Chestnut in 2015 Nathan’s Dog Eating Contest by eating 62 hot dogs to Joey’s 60. Joey surpassed his record a year later.
